This book took me by complete surprise. Not only in the style in which it is written – quirky, loveable, and wildly entertaining but for the suspense that I did not see coming. It takes office politics and coping with grief to a whole new level.Ava works as a product engineer at a Brooklyn-based furniture company of the affordable Swedish variety. Sound familiar? The pieces come complete with anthropomorphic names like the Encouraging Desk Chair, Enlightened Tray, and of course, the Very Nice Box, which is Ava’s baby. She is recently back at the office having suffered a terrible accident, which took its toll on her both physically and emotionally, losing the people closest to her.Städa, the company, runs like a well-oiled machine, which is precisely what Ava needs to get through the day. She parses her time in units, a trick she learned while recuperating in the hospital, allowing her to focus on fine tuning her project. That is until a new CMO is hired, her boss, and he stirs everything up including Ava’s mind. She soon finds herself caught up in Mat’s charm with his new-agey, positivity, soundbitey, all up in your face bro ways, which she normally 100 percent loathes.What the authors have done here is quite fabulous. Not only do they lure you in with an imaginative story that will tug at your heart, but the language is so attune to what the kids are saying that you can’t help but cringe and simultaneously want to throw back a Zing! Ginger-Turmeric Tonic with your co-workers while gossiping in the Wellness Kitchen.The cast of colleagues who supply Ava with office talk include her cubicle bestie Jaime who dazzles with head-to-toe floral attire that will have you casting him in the film adaptation as you turn pages, Judith, so perfectly unsuited in her role as head of the People Office, as she sucks the fun right out of the air, and Sofia, Jaime’s new straight shooter side kick, whose one line zingers speak the truth but you don’t want to be on the receiving end.I love how the many layers to this well-plotted novel keep unfolding, surprising you with more. THE VERY NICE BOX is a wonderful combination in a category all its own, about love and loss, with diverse characters, and the whole mess of life examined with tenderness and a lot of humor.
